Professional Liaison

The  Professional Liaison program enables spouses of internationals to address questions about their career during one-on-one conversations with local professionals in their field.

Internationals:

Many international spouses had professional careers prior to arriving at Stanford. Many have graduate degrees in science, engineering, medicine, business, and/or education.

Our community contacts are volunteers who donate time to share their professional experience with these international visitors.

How to participate

  • Applying for the Professional Liaison program is easy. Applicants are accepted throughout the year.
  • Applicants must be proficient in English, be unable to work in the U.S. due to visa status, and have no existing local contacts in his/her professional field.
  • Fill in the Application for Professional Liaison Program (PDF) or pick up a hard copy application at the Bechtel International Center upstairs reception desk. If available, a resume should be attached for the purpose of acquainting the local professional contact with your career background.
  • Return your completed application to the upstairs reception desk at the Bechtel International Center, or submit it to the Professional Liaison Coordinator.
  • The Professional Liaison Coordinator will review your application and then contact you to arrange a meeting, first with you and then with the professional contact person.

Volunteers:

Becoming a professional contact is easy and generally involves meeting with an international applicant to answer questions the applicant might have about a profession.

How to participate

  • Internationals’ applications are accepted throughout the year, but the vast majority of students arrive mid-August to the end of September when Fall classes begin.
  • The Professional Liaison Coordinator reviews each completed application and conducts an informal interview with the applicant to ascertain meeting objectives and the level of English communication. The coordinator will then search the list of CCIS volunteers who have offered to help for a professional contact in the applicant’s field of interest.
  • If you are the volunteer selected, the coordinator will contact you to share some background about the applicant and establish a time frame and location most convenient for a meeting. The coordinator will provide contact information to you and the applicant and ask you two to set up a meeting.  The coordinator will ask to be informed of the meeting, and will follow up with calls/e-mails to obtain feedback and to thank you for your time.
