Homestay
The Homestay program provides incoming graduate international students, including their spouses/partners, with a 2-4 day stay (3 nights maximum) with a local host in August or September before settling into their campus housing. Homestay experiences often become the basis for life-long connections!
Internationals:
Homestay offers a valuable opportunity to engage with a local family while becoming familiar with the area prior to beginning your studies at Stanford. Homestays typically are between mid-August and the start of the Fall quarter.
How to participate
It is preferable to submit your application when you have the dates for campus housing move-in as well as US arrival information. Please read through Homestay Qualifications (PDF) before submitting your application. You will then be contacted by the Homestay program manager, who will work with you for a possible host match. The Homestay is for 2 – 3 nights just prior to your move to Stanford housing.
Volunteers:
Welcome a newly arrived international graduate student to the area and help them get settled before their move to campus.
Meet the student at the airport (if possible) and host them in your home for 2-4 days (3 nights maximum) before they move to campus housing.
Arriving international graduate students often need more help adjusting to the area and culture. Some of the things you might help with could include shopping for a bike, setting up a bank account, obtaining household items (including a visit to the Loan Closet on campus), exploring transportation on and off campus, and more.
Homestay friendships often continue through the student’s time at Stanford, sharing holidays, family gatherings, and fun times.
